7-11 July 2008 HHC Ukraine held trainings for specialists of Centres of social services for family, children and youth who work at consultative desks (based at maternity hospitals and maternity welfare departments). The trainings were held within project frames on ‘Implementing of a system of training for social workers on prevention of newborn babies abandonment’ which is carried out due to support of UNICEF and in cooperation with the State Social Services for Family, Children and Youth.
Total number of participants was 38 persons. These were specialists from AR Crimea, Kherson, Luhansk, Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Lviv and Sumy oblasts and Sevastopol city. 5 qualified regional trainers from Odesa (K. Hostiminska), Cherkasy (A. Melnykova), Kyiv (T. Bondarenko and L. Tsisaruk) and Poltava (O. Kataieva) trained participants on various issues regarding prevention of children abandonment at early age).
Participants appreciated the high level of the trainers’ skills and the gained knowledge. They also highlighted some of the themes which they considered to be especially interesting and rather useful for their activity:
- work with close environment of the women who are in difficult life;
- family group conferences;
- development of skills of being a responsible parent (for women at Consultative Desks and Mother and Baby Units);
- methods of short-time therapy;
- legislation on creation and activity of Mother and Baby Units;
- practical aspects of counseling;
- social guidance;
- prevention of professional burn-out;
- methods of individual work with beneficiaries at Consultative Desks and Mother and Baby Units;
- ethic of a social worker;
- peculiarities of child’s development at early age;
- styles of child upbringing;

Big family celebration for 65 family type homes from 13 oblasts of Ukraine

Participants of the conference developed a Resolution based on the results of the workshops and plenary sessions. The Resolution will be sent to relevant central executive bodies. The document contains developed proposals and recommendations regarding improvement of reforming of state institutions, complex approach to deinstitutionalisation implementation and development of new directions of the state social policy.
